Europe is crazy

Now we all know Europe has been on the forefront of reality TV programming, usually inventing our favorite shows first and doing it with more boobs. But did you know that Europe has had an American-Idol style song contest going on for over 50 years? The latest one happened over the weekend and despite living right in the middle of Europe I had no idea. Of course, I stopped trying to watch German TV after the first week, so I guess that's not surprising. Leave it to Slate to let me know what I missed. Finnish "rockers" Lordi took home the top prize in a performance that must be seen to be believed.

Obviously the "best" performers never win phone-based voting contests, but I'm pretty sure lyrics like "Arockalypse" or "Day of Rockening" should be grounds for disqualification.

Also, that song you think this sounds exactly like is "Eye of the Tiger."

My favorite is the keyboard player who looks like Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride.

I love the Eurovision Song Contest! When I was living in Scotland, the Ukrainians won with a song called “Go Go Go Wild Dancers.” The singers all wore fur bikinis. They were supposed to be cavewomen, I think.

I have two favorite things about the Eurovision Song Contest:
    1. The fact that voting is totally based on politics. Like how Greece and Cyprus never vote for each other no matter how good their songs are. And how no one ever ever ever votes for Norway.
    2. The fact that Israel is included. Israel, you may remember, is not in Europe. Was Europe just like, “Hey Israel, sorry about all those Jews we killed that one time. Wanna join our song contest?”

Actually Slate and Wikipedia say that Greece and Cyprus always vote for each other, but the point is the same. Screw Norway.

As for Israel, I assumed the same thing, but the contest is open to any country in the European Broadcasting Union, which includes a number of countries outside of Europe proper. Morocco has participated as well (thanks Wikipedia!)

Sign that I’ve been watching too much Buffy: The lead singer’s face makeup reminded me of a vengeance demon.

Oops, I totally meant always, not never! Clearly noon is still way too early for me to be awake and typing. Thanks for the correction.

Interesting about the Morocco/EBU thing!! I heart wiki.

I haven’t laughed that hard for that long in a really, really long time. Just when I started not to laugh… out came the giant bat wings. MY LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
