Self-selecting democracy at work
There's something satisfying about seeing that people agree with you, even if the group of people is as small as "people who read a lot about television on the internet." That's why the Tubey Awards on Television Without Pity, running all this week, bring a smile to my face. High School Musical really is the best made-for-TV-movie. And it's true, Tim Gunn is the most appealing reality star.
Maybe the desire to vote for favorites and see yours win is a holdover from the childhood fear of never belonging. Maybe the gleeful thought that "YES! everyone agrees with me!" is part of an urge to embrace fascism. Or it's just fun, and there's nothing on TV except for Rock Star and only I care about that (Jill and Zayra must go! Can't you knock two out this week, Tommy Lee? Just this once?), so why not read the results of an enormous taste poll?
One conclusion drawn from these awards: someone on TiFaux has got to start watching Battlestar Galactica.
