New show: The Class

In General
I wasn't really planning on watching The Class. The premise — 3rd-grade classmates become Friends — is silly, and I have no patience for traditional sitcoms with a laugh track (or at least I try to have no patience, but I keep watching goddam How I Met Your Mother anyway. Speaking of which, there was a premiere last night. So when's Lily coming back? And are they ever going to add any new characters? I'm kind of getting sick of the ones we have. Except Barney.)
Anyway, The Class is pretty bad. The woman married to the closeted gay guy is the absolute worst; she reminded me of someone doing a "Humorous Interpretation" (or HI, for those in the know — it's not acting, it's "interpretation") at a high school speech competition. She's followed closely by the guy living with his mother and the chick from Joey as my least favorite parts of a sometimes painfully bad half hour.
The best is Jesse Tyler Ferguson, seen at left in The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee.
His character's name in the Spelling Bee was Leaf Coneybear. He wore a cape. He was my favorite.
And he was my favorite on The Class, too, and one of my top three favorite famous redheaded guys*.
I also liked the girl who was the goth chick in Mean Girls. But I think that's just because she reminded me of Mean Girls.
Which is how I learned an important lesson: Just because you appreciate an actor's previous work (broadway shows, Mean Girls), and believe that they have the makings of a great performer, does not mean you have to support every little thing they do.
So, goodbye, The Class. Maybe if I'm home alone and bored and drunk sometime I'll watch you again.
*1) Eric Stoltz, 2) Paul Bettany, 3) Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

I agree that How I Met Your Mother needs to bring in some new blood, because “Ted and Robin suck face” is not a season-long storyline in the making . . . especially because she’s not “Your Mother.” On a related note, how grody is it that Bob Saget is telling his kids about hitting it with someone who isn’t their mom? Is it better or worse than telling them about hitting it with their mom? Or equally icky?
But I could watch NPH for, like, a week straight. I have this secret fantasy wherein Jason Segel and John Krasinski get their own show (called something like Tall Hot Boys) and NPH is their hedge-fund manager or something.

I’m giving The Class an additional 2 episodes to prove itself to me, but I expect almost nothing from it. Let’s talk about the improbable span of life experiences across that same-aged class, shall we? One still lives with his mom. Two are full fledged doctors. One has what appears to be a 7 year old child (meaning she got pregnant at 21) and thinks it’s okay to wear red power suits (a) at all and (b) to a party at someone’s apartment. One is married to a guy 25 years her senior.
Really, all this show did was make me want to be the one to plan my 10 year high school reunion. I would be way better than the douche who did it on this show.

I’ll give it a little longer, too, if only because I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson in it and have heard it gets better (and, to be fair, the pilot was mostly set-up anyway). But yeah, it sucked, mostly.

I still believe that the whole HIMYM thing is going to be a “no man of woman born” trick, like Robin’s not their biological mother, but she is raising them, or their mother died in childbirth after having a one-night stand with Ted while he and Robin were on a break (they were on a break!) that he practically forgot about until the kids show up on his doorstep, and then Robin has to find it in her heart to forgive him so they can take care of babies together, JUST LIKE THAT OTHER SHOW.

In this scenario, the kids must be twins.
