Gilmore speculation

In Gilmore Girls
This post includes widely-known spoilers for the next couple of Gilmore Girls episodes, but is primarily composed of rampant speculation.
Gilmore Girls is in trouble. Everyone who writes about the show tends to agree — this Lorelai and Christopher thing is boxing them into a corner that they're going to have a really, really hard time getting out of it.
What's really scary is that Chris and Lorelai are eloping. That's right, eloping. This means they'll be married. Annoying! How on earth is Lorelai going to get rid of him once she's bound to him til death?
That's where I got my theory: The show's going to kill Christopher. Suddenly, in an accident. His death will have the following effects:
- Lorelai and Rory will be very sad.
- They will also be independently wealthy.
- Lorelai will start to be friends with Luke again. Friends only, like at the beginning of the series.
- Hopefully, Logan's reaction to Rory's grief will be so terrible that she will be forced to dump him. Or, she dumps him because he reminds her too much of her dad. Or, he just leaves. Leave, Logan! You're not wanted, either!
I can't say it's a good idea, but I also can't think of any other options. It's a little too late in their relationship to discover they actually can't stand each other.
Thoughts?

Maggie, you plot-solving genius. While the GG hasn’t always treated marriage as a “till death” sort of thing (um, remember when Luke got married on a cruise ship? out of character much?), they can’t marry and divorce Lorelai and Christopher in one season. So the only way other than death to have an elopement reversed would be for some sort of legal issue to make the marriage invalid (like some sort of French-US kerfuffle assuming they marry while in Paris, or Christopher not being officially divorced from Sherry, whose name is spelled like the cooking wine, both of which I’ve heard bantered about). Which is soap-y and dumb. But, then, so was having a heretofore unknown GoodOl’DaysRory-clone daughter who lived 15 minutes away drive a wedge between Luke and Lorelai. So basically after all that, no conclusions. Just fear and awe at how high sharks can jump.

i very much want them to kill christopher. i never liked him.
a more realistic thing would be to have him cheat on her–i know he says he’s in it for the long haul, but really? with that track record? lies, all lies–and then she’ll be sad. and rory will be mad. drama! lorelai will slide back into be being friends with luke, who will be fine and upstanding and not say i told you so. romance! maybe! in that what we used to love about luke and lorelai! and april will be accepted into some fancy private…wait for it…boarding school and go away and stop being an annoying plot point trying to be (rory) her own actual character .
the end! (jazz hands)

Yeah, Luke’s “marriage” came and went like a foot rash — no one really knows it’s there, and then it disappears after an appropriate interval. Though having already done the cheating thing to break up that “marriage,” I’m not sure they can repeat it again this time. Who’s Christopher going to meet, anyway? He has no job and no other friends. What, he’s going to suddenly run off with Gypsy?
I think the US-France thing is interesting — maybe once she has a chance to think about it, back at home, she can’t go through with it? But seriously though, getting married is getting married, mentally if not legally. No law can change that.
My other prediction is that Rory is going to cheat on Logan. PLEASE.
Anyway, we shall see.

Chris and Lolelai belong as friends. She belongs to Luke. (Since the first episode)
But to kill Chris would be too much for her or Rory to handle. And Rory needs to grow up and realize that Logan is just not what she grew up wanting. (But they make a great couple).

1. Genuis, Mags. I love it.
2. Not love it in that way. I don’t want him to die, as I think Christopher is (a) hot and (b) interesting. He’s grown in interesting ways. Not “I learned I have a daughter and whoa, I don’t hate kids” way, but in a “I was a screwup for a loooong time, but I’ll try to stick it out this time.”
3. But that makes it interesting, the dying, and it is neat (as in tidy). TV shows need that, and the show will probably end soon, so I imagine they need to resolve it. And they’re not going to resolve it with a guy who’s not in the credits.
4. God, I hate Logan.
5. More on Christopher — I saw a rerun a few days back of the first time he shows up. And either Lorelei or Rory mentioned that he calls every few days. So even though it wasn’t backed up in the writing, I don’t think he was technically supposed to be quite as much of an absent asshat. Quite.
