Maria Bamford: The (female) love of my life
True story:
This past November I met the non-William and Mary half of TiFaux for the first time. I hadn't been to New York for a while and I had people to visit and I thought it would be weird to actually see Maggie and Kyle walk and talk.
It was tremendously exciting. I arrived in NYC, stressed out about wearing a cute shirt, and then took the bus from Red Hook to Park Slope. Upon my arrival, I got to see that not only do they walk and talk, but they drink beer and play bocce ball as well. We held hands, we sang songs and we promised each other "Next year in Jerusalem!"
As awesome as it was to meet them, the reason I actually got off my DC-based ass and onto a Chinatown bus was because Maria Bamford was doing a show in the Village. She's taking some time off of touring, so this was probably going to be my last time to see her unless I want to go to LA.
And I don't.
Maria Bamford is probably my favorite comedian. She's one of the Comedians of Comedy and has had her own Comedy Central presents stand-up special. I probably love her a tiny bit more than Kathy Griffin — just because she's such an oddball and she's much more lovable than Kathy.
Maria is probably best known for her voices. Her normal speaking voice is a girly squeak, but she'll often stop on a dime and switch to her gravelly mother, her annoying boss at her temp job, etc. It's shocking that there are so many people living inside her at one time, especially when she presents herself as harmless and sweet.
The real reason for this post is to warn you that her new comedy special will premiere on February 16 at 10:30. Get excited, people. I'll warn you again as the time approaches.
In the meantime, check out this 3-minute stand-up set. It will show you why I love this woman.
