Studio 60: It’s back and it’s pissed

In Studio 60
Cristin and Maggie have already started hashing out last night’s Studio 60 in the comments, so we may as well dive in head-first. Here is a numbered list (you know how I like my lists) of reflections I have on last night’s episode.
We were all on the show last night.
- Allison Janney is a trooper and a great guest star. Good show. Also, a confirmation — she and director-guy were an item on The West Wing? Because I didn’t watch that show, but I sensed there was some meta-winking.
- I concur with Cristin that Harriet was a huge asshole, being snooty to the other cast members and then forcing them all to care about her annoying relationship problems.
- The whole Simon-has-two-dates-to-Hawaii was kind of hacky sitcom fare — complete with pratfalls and Dynasty-era slaps across the face.
- The absence of Matt and Danny was kind of welcome. There was a enough crap going down on this episode that if we had to deal with Matt’s neurosis and all the Danny/Jordan crap, I pretty much would have had a psychological meltdown.
- I tend to dislike disaster comedy — the whole “Meet the Parents” kind of schadenfreude entertainment. I carry around enough tension all day that I don’t need it in my filmed entertainment. That said, the whole spontaneous bullets busting out of Allison Janney’s dress was pretty amusing. (PS — I totally spelled schadenfreude right on the first try!)
- You probably didn’t watch it, but 30 Rock reran the episode with Liz’s lesbian date last night. That’s still probably my favorite episode and has some of the greatest lines (“those shoes are definitely bicurious!”).
Okay, everybody, let’s hear it. Don’t embarass me by not leaving comments after I’ve spent all this time soliciting them. Don’t you love me?

This show has to be one of the most disappointing enterprises to show up in a long time. I loved the characters and the premise and the set and the writing and the production always seemed sharp and skillful. But this episode seemed a total waste.
WHAT’S THE POINT???
Just to give old friends a job and tickle us West Wing fans.
I fear this is going to be a very sad death. Lingering…
I’m getting rather disgusted with TV lately, since all of my shows seem to be dying undistinguished deaths (GG, Studio 60) or losing their Mojo (Grey’s Anatomy, 24, Brothers & Sisters [ok I admit B & S never had much mojo]). Soon I will be left with only Comedy Central News Hour and Charlie Rose.
Oh, and 30 Rock, If Alec doesn’t retire to build a support network for Ex-husbands with Anger Management issues.

Yes, Allison Janney and Tim Busfield were an item on WW. They were adorable.
I DID watch the 30 Rock! It’s the one with the poker game, and where we find out that Liz dated Conan! It is my second-favorite episode, after “Tracy Does Conan,” where Liz gives blood and has to solve everyone’s problems.
I don’t know why the cast was so mean to Allison Janney. Was it supposed to be friendly ribbing?
Favorite part: when Jack admits that he’s totally drunk right now.
Least favorite: the really, really, really sappy ending.

I love you, Dan. But that episode sucked out loud. I remember posting a very cross comment here last year after Maggie had laid into the show back when it was good. I think that’s why I started reading.
