In General The Office
In honor of Knocked Up opening this Friday, I’ve declared this Judd Apatow week on TiFaux. Of course, it’s already Wednesday, so it won’t be much of a celebration, but we do what we can. And what we can is post clips of Apatow’s stellar television work.
First up, a clip from the cult favorite Freaks and Geeks. Freaks and Geeks ran for less than a season on ABCNBC in 1999-2000 (which, side note: so totally more of an NBC show) [factchecking? bah!]. It’s odd and hilarious and depressing. The characters are genuine, believable weirdos, and you really feel for each of them — from the charismatic cheater to his mean-because-she’s-vulnerable girlfriend, and from the needy freak poser to her math-team-loving ex-best-friend.
This is a show that’s funny and deeply embarrassing. Remember when Michael Scott shows the video of himself as a child where he says “I wanna be married and have 100 kids so I can have 100 friends, and no one can say no to being my friend”? And it’s hilarious but also the saddest thing you’ve ever seen? That’s this show. Only in high school. And with more smoking pot.
Love it! Freaks & Geeks + The Office + Buffy + MASH = my top tv shows ever. Thus far. Oh, and maybe that show where the Canadian mountie and his pet wolf team up with a gritty Italian-American cop to fight crime in Chicago.
But yes, Freaks & Geeks - everyone go Netflix it!
which, side note: so totally more of an NBC show
I think it’s more of a FOX show, in that it was original and funny and cancelled right away.
Actually, Maggie is wrong/right (wright?) — it *was* on NBC, which seems weird, because NBC has shown patience in recent years with lots of quality, low-rated stuff. I guess this was a different, more cocky NBC, at the turn of the millenium, back when their Thursday night lineup was “Friends + three crappy shows of our choice!”
Totally right, Jesse. I don’t know what’s wrong with me… other than my inability to do some simple googling, of course. I am lazy. Sorry.
