Summer Brainstorming

Posted by Maggie June 8th, 2007 at 10:24am In All Things TV

As Dan pointed out, it has been a slow week. I believe the only new show I’ve watched was Studio 60. Lucky me! But thankfully there are still shows out there to watch on DVD. I’ve already started with Alias, and I have Friday Night Lights sitting waiting for me whenever I’m ready. Also, as I’ve mentioned, the DVD of Deadwood’s last season comes out on Tuesday, and I am kind of giddy about it.

Any other ideas for series that are great on DVD? I asked this last year, and proceeded to not really follow anyone’s suggestions. This year I promise to be better. I try to choose shows that have three or fewer seasons in the can, but this is a bendable rule, so suggest away!

Also, what are you watching this summer that you always wanted to watch but never had time to catch the whole thing? Please share.

Also, answer this poll.

Some shows are so engrossing and addictive, it's hard to immerse yourself for just an hour a week. What show benefits most from DVD?

As long as you ask this question, I will always suggest Six Feet Under. Sigh… the good old days.

I’m sure I will eventually give in and then totally love it.

Does anyone watch the Sopranos? Isn’t it a little odd that we don’t talk about the Sopranos, but you can’t escape it anywhere else?

I watch. On Sundays, my brother, sister-in-law and I go to my Mom’s house where she will have prepared some sort of fish dish she saw done on the Food Network. And then we watch The Sopranos. I never post about it because I can’t really think of a whole lot to say about it. That, and because I am always confused by it.

How do you have FNL on DVD already?? I can’t even find a pre-order option on Amazon.

Was it just me, or did Studio 60 . . . not . . . suck as much last night? I mean, I spent the whole Danny-and-Jordan storyline thinking how this story totally doesn’t turn out well, but when Matt hollered, “We’ve been having this argument in TWO DIFFERENT MILLENNIA NOW” I actually laughed. Surprising myself a lot. And despite how manipulative the storyline is, Nate Corddry is doing a hell of a job.

Also, (and this is not a full endorsement) I actually really enjoyed the debate Cal and Matt and Lawyer and Jack were having about the K&R. It was an actual debate! With people arguing persuasively (and not crazily) for each side! Nice work.

It was very West Wing–y. And the lawyer wasn’t acting like a giggling idiot, for once. Where’s the two-headed monster of your dad and my brother to pop up and shriek “Aha! You liked it!”

I’m amazed you guys even gave Studio 60 the time of day. I refuse to even bother.

I swear, with God as my witness, I will attempt to watch as much Battlestar Galactica as I can this summer.

Jeremy, we will aid you in your quest. Let us know when you want to watch the miniseries and I’ll cook.

    “Aha! You liked it!”

    Hehehe

I actually didn’t catch it until last night because my victory lap indulgence in my GG fetish is taking up all of my viewing time (plus Sopranos and, of course, Studio 60(hehehe).

Soprano’s talk: Does anyone else really want to see Carm and the obnoxious kid get mowed down like Scarface? Or should I be seeking professional help?

    Finalmente Studio 60: Tragedy looms.

    DVDs for Summer Fun:

I recently got pulled into a Whedon hole that it took me a long time to crawl out of.
    - Started with Season 4 of Buffy. Thought RIley was hot, so I volunteered for Season 5. Then, After that commitment, I couldn’t pass of 6 & 7, now could I?
-After Buffy7, I had to watch FireFly again to erase the terrible memory of Nathan Fillion in Season 7. (“beeeeiotch!”).
    - But then, was I neglecting Angel? I remembered seeing 1 episode, hilariously out of context (i didn’t watch the show when it was on air) where a green guy with horns did the dance of joy in celebration os someone’s suffering. It was so weird and awkward that I had to find this episode again… and so it went…

As you can see, this was a deep, deep whole. It took an intervention of dear friends for me to leave these DVDs behind.

    DVD warning:
    - Let yourself fall in love with Season 1 & 2 of Alias. It’s a good love. A pure love. But expect no more! Do not rent on! Only tears and bitterness lay beyond…

Other DVD classics (that you’ve no doubt already seen):
    - British Office
    - Pride & Prejudice (ahhhhh Fitzwilliam)
    - Attila – Gerard Butler is hot. That’s really all this series has to offer, but still :) (If you fall too in love with him, rent Beowulf. That will do the trick nicely.)
    - Dr. Zhivago with Keira Knightley. Crap-tastic! Absolutely Impossible to look away from.
    - Ist half of David Copperfield with Daniel Radcliffe.

    Brainstorming about Series on DVD:

What I really want is a new medium – a mega disk or perhaps a carousel – or a way to load many disks into storage so that one could request a logical view through the entire work. Then all of the scenes could be tagged and you could query the database.

What then, you ask? Well using my beloved GG as example, you could ask to see all of the strictly Loralei/Rory scenes in sequence or the saga according to Kirk (Heaven forfend!) or ‘life in the diner’. Maggie, you should enjoy the complete ‘Colin and Finn’ (something like Rosenkranz and Guildenstern are Dead, without the jokes). It could be indexed at a lower level (below ‘scene’), marking every character exit and entrance. Eventually the user would be empowered to re-edit the complete work allowing everyone to play as Coppola did with the first two Godfathers, rearranging the narrative as he wishes.

Anyone want to buy my machine?
