In The Funk
Malajube isn’t exactly new. In fact, this video is more than a year old. But there’s a chance you haven’t heard of them, so here we go.
I first saw Malajube play live when they played in D.C. with Snowden (who, I realized, only really have one song I am enthusiastic about — the title track to Anti-Anti). Even though I had never heard them before, I was quite charmed by the lads. Maybe it was the fact that the singer kept his silly hat on for the entire set, making him bear an uncanny resemblance to Gael Garcia Bernal in The Science of Sleep. Maybe it was their French Canadian accents (like Celine, only indie!) or maybe it was their faux bitterness about Washington stealing the Expos.
God, I love Canadians… But, I digress.
Malajube’s style could be described, I suppose, as fairly straight-ahead rock with keyboard embellishments. Oh, and they sing in French — so that satisfies my kitsch requirements.
The following is the video for my favorite song of theirs: “Montreal -40.”[kml_flashembed movie="http://youtube.com/v/6oThf3jjg1Y" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]
