Countdown to disappointment

In Special Events
The Emmys are on Sunday.
It always sounds like so much fun, right? But then it isn’t. The reasons?
- The red carpet ends up with awkward chatter between Billy Bush and the fourth supporting actor on CSI: Whatever.
- The host often ends up being a dud (and this time around there’s nothing that can’t be ruined by Ryan Seacrest).
- You have to sit through a hundred million awards for the best miniseries/made-for-TV movie and you totally haven’t seen any of them.
- You spend the whole time wondering if Joan Rivers’ face is just going to snap off and fly across the crowd (although she’s been reduced to Internet live blogging this time).
- Some pain in the ass show you either don’t watch or don’t care about ends up winning all the awards.
So, yeah. I don’t know why I’m such a Negative Nellie today. But I’m just preparing myself for a Charlie Sheen/Jon Cryer sweep. I’m fully ready to fly into a rage if anyone from that show wins (my hatred for it defies all reason).
Anyways, the real question is this: who do we all want to win? There are going to be some tough choices. Alec or Steve? Heroes or House? The entire ‘meh’ best supporting actress in a drama category.
Here are all the awards anyone cares about. Sound off!

The Emmys are a terrible show. I remember back in the day (yes I had to walk twenty miles uphill, both ways, in the snow, to get to elementary school and lunch cost a quarter) when there were only 3 networks and maybe 3 good shows; when TV actors were largely former B movie stars (Ronald Reagan, Donna Reed, Ida Lupino, Lucille Ball etc.); when everyone knew and had seen the shows in question; even when the show was live from Los Angeles AND New York; and when the Emmys were the main award show competition to the Oscars. (No Tony broadcast, nor Golden Globes, nor AFI Life Achievement, nor Kennedy Center Honors, nor the unwatchable Grammys, not too mention the despicable ‘we want to give you an award, can you come?’ monstrosities which shall go nameless with contempt.
Even then, this was a dreadful show.
And why, oh why, with the plethora of intelligent and compelling product out there now are we treated to a category like Best Supporting Actress in a drama with two actors from ‘The Sopranos’ and THREE actors from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’!
And can someone tell me what is so noteworty about ‘Two and a Half Men’? Isn’t this just a pitiful rehash of ‘Three Men and A Baby’ meets ‘Full House’ with a ‘Silver Spoon’? Mindless Tripe. Yuch!
Having said this, will I watch? Resentfully yes…
(Sorry to be such a chatterbox, Dan, but things are incredibly slow at work today and besides I’ve got to uphold my Trollish rep)

The drama categories are so dreary. I don’t watch any of those shows!
And maybe I’m hallucinating, but do they change which category Boston Legal goes in like every year? I could have sworn it was a “comedy” the last time James Spader was inflicted on us.
Ugh. Why is that still on? Battlestar wins everything…in my heart pants.

I actually find that by TIVOing a show like the Emmys (or taping it on the VCR in prehistoric times), I can zip through it in a fraction of the normal running time. Skip all the commercials and the dull and/or appalling stuff, but you can always rewind for those rare moments you might actually be interested in. Hats off to anyone who can actually endure it live from start to finish.

Every year I feel like I should boycott due to the shameful lack of nomination for so many great shows/stars, but every year I end up watching anyway, and every year I’m sorry I did. Sigh.

Heh. I meant to cross out “heart.” But BSG does win in my heart pants as well, whatever those are.

I always forget what these awards shows really are, and go in all doe-eyed and hopeful for Rainn Wilson and Terry O’Quinn to get some love, then sigh a weary sigh when the Sopranos and Two and Half Men win everything. That Ryan Seacrest is hosting is just slightly more of a joke than the fact that Battlestar got shut out entirely. It hurts my heart.
