Mike Huckabee, funny?

Now I don’t know a lot about Mike Huckabee, but he strikes me as someone I will never vote for. That said, the man makes a funny political ad.

It reminds me of that time Bob Dole went on Letterman after he lost against Clinton. He was a humorless bore during the election but after he lost he was hilarious (creepy Viagra ads notwithstanding).

Is it possible for a serious contender (which Huckabee clearly is not) to stop being so serious during an election and still remain a serious contender?

The reason Huckabee succeeds at being funny is that he actually has more experiance than any other candidate in the race and his humor has been used as a weapon to get things done for over a decade.

Disagreeing with his politics is one thing, but Huckabee is a very serious candidate for President because he balances humor and substance very well. He has proposed some pretty pioneering stuff in these debates and is frankly the only interesting candidate in the debates period.

It’s refreshing to have interns from political campaigns commenting here instead of interns from the CW.

Oh, heavens, no. Bob Dole has an inside-the-Beltway reputation for being perhaps the funniest man in American politics ever. He just can’t campaign for shit.

Bob Dole was a maddening politician. He could be mean spirited and offensively agressive, but he was perhaps the funniest politician I’ve ever heard.

My favorite Dole witticism came when he testified before his brother senators regarding the qualifications of one of his constituents, his wife, who was nominated to be Secretary of Labor. One of his colleagues asked:

Panel Member: “Senator Dole, you have a lot of responsibility as Majority Leader in the Senate. Aren’t you concerned that having your wife take on such a demanding job might negatively impact your homelife and complicate your already demanding life?”

Dole: “Senator, My only regret is that I have but one wife to give for my country.”

I always believed that the idea that Bob Dole was one of the funniest persons in Washington said a lot about the unfortunae state of humor here in DC. Former Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson was another supposedly funny guy I never found all that humorous.
