TPTB on LOST needed a WTF OMG! cliffhanger moment for the last episode they were going to have time to finish writing before the writers strike began. No one knew how long that strike would last and Mira Furlan had accepted a role in a movie that would keep her in Europe from mid-December until the beginning of March.
