The Funk: Crystal Castles

It’s true that kids who grew up in the 80s are now at the age when we’re steering the edgiest music out there. This phenomenon is evidenced by Crystal Castles’ debut, which features a lot of inspiration from 8-bit video game sounds, augmented by digital hardcore shouts. The band, named for She-Ra’s castle (see, another TV tie-in), has previously remixed a lot of other bands’ material.

Personally, I like Crystal Castles at their most intense — when the electronic blips are going out of control and singer Alice Glass is screaming the hardest. Not that you asked, but if you want to download some songs, I’d recommend Xxzxcuzx Me or Alice Practice. However, their video is for a more subdued track called Courtship Dating. You can kind of get a feel for their vibe here — at least the darkness and robotic tendencies.
