Who Won Thursday

Posted by Marisa May 2nd, 2010 at 10:32pm In 30 Rock Community Parks and Recreation The Office Who Won Thursday?

This is going to be another lightning-round edition, because once again I was indisposed on Thursday and just caught up. What? I’m allowed to have a life! I partied on Thursday like all the young people do.  (So very tired.)

Anyway, who won Thursday?

30 Rock, “Argus”

Community was the weakest it’s been all season (those kids were NOT FUNNY), and the Office was too awkward for me to watch at certain points. Parks & Rec was funny — especially with the Ron & April bits — but Leslie’s emotional revelation didn’t hit exactly as it should have.

30 Rock, though, had me rolling just in the first few minutes. (“Is it one of those bendy hospital beds?”) (“It’s a Vietnamese size 2.”) Sometimes I get frustrated when an episode divides into too many sub-plots, but this time they were all funny: Jack and the “swamp eagle” (“He’s chosen a mate.” “Lemon.” “Good luck with that!”), Grizz’s Best Man selection (“I’ve known Dotcom ever since we went to Above the Beanstalk, a free summer camp for giants.), and Jenna’s relationship with a Jenna impersonator (“Why are you being so happy and nice? Are you soaking your tampons in vodka again?”). Then there were all those side-gags about Hornberger (I mean Dallas) being cowardly, or Liz’s past with Grizz. It was just dense with jokes, badgers.

Programming note: I’m not going to be here again this Thursday. I’m just that cool. Actually, I’m reviewing local theater for my day job, so not really. It’ll be another super-short WWT, but then we should be on track to do full episode reviews again.

I might have to go with The Office this week because just about every character was used really well, and it was a pretty classic Office mixture of awkwardness with just a dash of sweetness. Agree that Community was at a season low.

I must disagree about Community. I thought this episode was as funny as “Contemporary American Poultry” the week before. Those children were awful, but everything else was hilarious. Especially Winger macking on Lisa Rinna. I was howling. And like Jesse said, The Office felt like a very classic, awkward episode, almost as cringe-inducing as some of the season 1 stuff. (Remember when Michael gave Kelly the Spicy Curry Award? I almost crawled under the couch.)

Although the “Above the Beanstalk” joke on 30 Rock seriously almost killed me. That was awesome. But I couldn’t deal with the peacock stuff. There’s inside baseball, and then there’s OMG no one except Nate Silver is paying attention to you rambling about VORP–inside baseball.

I don’t think the peacock stuff was really particularly inside; I mean, there were jokes about Liz being freaked/grossed out by a freaky/gross bird, and jokes about Kenneth calling it a “swamp lizard.” Even the exec stuff isn’t particularly inside-NBC, I don’t think.

Community is nice enough, but episodes like that make it clear to me that it’s the lightweight of the four shows — it has well-crafted characters, but I get the sense that the writers find their material just a bit more sophisticated and hilarious than I do. Their fascination with meta humor is particularly bizarre; 30 Rock will do a ten-second meta joke that’s funnier than any episode-long elaborate homages to bad college movies (maybe because The Simpsons and Futurama both hit the elaborate homages to bad college movies harder and funnier, years and years before).
