In Battlestar Galactica
I’m done with the first season of Battlestar Galactica! Woohoo! I know I’m late to the party, but I need something to occupy my time now that everything is in writer’s strike-caused reruns.

Say wha? When does Xena show up?
For the record, I like the show. However, I think I am the victim of unrealistic expectations. Everyone seems so excited about the show that I thought it would blow my mind with every episode — but I think I’d describe it as “very watchable.”
In any case, here are some of my reflections as I continue to trudge through the first half of the second season.
- How is Starbuck not a lesbian icon of near-Etheridgian proportions? Or, well, maybe she already is and I just don’t know it yet because I’m not hanging out at the right dog parks. Anyhow, the tank tops, the take-no-prisoners/can-do attitude…
- I keep thinking of her as President Stands With a Fist. Because I can’t remember much that Mary McDonnell’s done since Dances with Wolves. And when I was 13, I remember going to see that movie and my mom thinking Kevin Costner was the bee’s knees. I don’t know why.
- Okay, so Edward James Olmos is totally Latino. Couldn’t be more Latino if he tried. And Jamie Bamber is the whitest boy this side of the Allegheny. Whiter than Angie Harmon on her best day. And yet they’re playing father and son. Are we just supposed to go with this? I mean, whatever. I’m just wondering.
- Gonna just put it out there — I’m getting kind of tired of Imaginary Number Six. Every scene she’s in finds her getting all up in Baltar’s business and breathing all heavy-like. It’s like the same scene over and over. I kind of think it’s just an excuse to get Tricia Helfer up on the screen so she can swing her mighty boobs to and fro. Which, I suppose, is appealing for certain demographics.
- Col. Tigh’s wife is best summed up as Cheryl Hines + Lindsay Lohan X Lady MacBeth.
I prefer to think of Mary McDonnell as Donnie’s mother in Donnie Darko. She’s wonderfully distant and self-possessed in it.
Ellen! UGH! How I hated her when she appeared!
I totally wondered about the Eddie James Olmos/Jamie Bamber thing too. I guess we’re supposed to believe that he looks more like his momma and not at all like daddy-o (the dead brother looks a lot more Latino-ish). Oh well.
watch enough BSG and you will become familiar wth what many call the”hand wave”- it’s basically the hand action you make when saying “whatever”. you have to do it a LOT for this show. i.e olmos and bamber playing father and son.
also, when six’s spine glows red (showing she’s a cylon) during sex. you think she and baltar never did it doggie?
tu-tonka! yeah, when my dad saw that movie he said that mary mcdonnell was the most beautiful woman in the world.
Yeah, when Mrs. Mommy Adama shows up, I think I remember that she’s kind of blonde and Aryan. So that could explain how we got the very Caucasian Lee. And his brother, in flashbacks, looks a little more like Adama, so…yeah. Disbelief? Meathook.
Also, Edward James Olmos’s real son plays one of the Viper pilot nuggets. It’s really obvious who’s related.
God, I’m so glad you’re watching. What are your thoughts on Chief vs. Helo?
I think perhaps Pandacita’s and my weird obsession with getting you to watch the show may be partly to blame for your super-high expectations going in. But I’m glad you’re watching!
Does Xena not show up until the second season? I can’t remember now.
Having 6 in Baltar’s head pays off later; I know it got annoying in the first season. I like the Xena cylone, she’s a loon.
You should watch Horatio Hornblower, the A&E miniseries. Jamie Bamber plays Horatio Hornblower’s secret lover with his real-life English accent. Man oh man! On a boat!
Re: Sara’s Q, I definitely vote Chief over Helo. I heart the Chief.
Re: Adamas Sr. and Jr. - my cousin, who looks like me (i.e. whitey white white) married a half-Japanese guy. Their first son looks totally Japanese and their second son is a total Blondey McBlueeyes. So it could happen.
On a semi-related note (in that it’s sci-fi and that I’m late to the party), I just finished up the first two volumes of Futurama. It’s really funny. Hooray for space!
